Youth Sponsorship Program
Do you have a child eager to find out more about their new location before they PCS to McConnell! All Youth between 5-18 can request a youth sponsor before, during, or after their move to the Wichita area. A youth sponsor can provide you with information about schools, shopping, and culture or maybe become your new friend! Youth Sponsorship is coordinated by the Youth Program and will match sponsors to new youth according to gender, age/grade, interests/hobbies and school attending.
Why request a Youth Sponsor?
Moving to a completely new location is sometimes scary, exciting but always new and different. It always helps when you have someone that can show you around and tell you about your school or program, the community, and places to see and shop, and introduce you to new friends. The Youth Sponsorship Program can help your transition to a new place easier no matter if it is a school, sports or Family Child Care home.
Why become a Youth Sponsor?
Everyone is encouraged to become a youth sponsor. If you like to help and meet new friends, then being a Sponsor is the right thing to do. As a Youth Sponsor, you get to identify, meet and help incoming teens and youth. You provide them with friendship, a warm welcome, information, and possibly a tour of the community/program.
This is a great leadership role, and the time spent volunteering as a youth sponsor will be added to your time as a youth volunteer on the post or at school.
Call the Youth Center at 316-759-4070 to talk to us. We will put you in touch with a McConnell youth. Learn about McConnell and the surrounding area and make a new friend at the same time!
- Our planned programs focus on 9-18, unless otherwise specified.
- Youth using the facility must be members of the Youth Center with a current AF 88 on file, and current flu shot on or before 30 November each year. To become a member, call 759-4070 or come by the facility.
- Hours of operation are posted on the front door of the Youth Center, and will list winter or summer hours. Dates and times are subject to change, so please call the Youth Center for more information at 316-759-4070.
- Interested in becoming a sponsor for an incoming youth member? Give us a call for details!

Million Members, Million Hours of ServiceStudies show that young people who engage in service within their community do better in school, maintain positive relationships with adults and avoid risky behaviors. These students are also LESS likely to drop out of high school and MORE likely to graduate than their peers who do not serve. Supported by the Citi Foundation, the Million Members, Million Hours of Service Initiative encourages children throughout the nation to become involved in service learning projects and embolden them to become helpful and productive citizens. As a supporter of the Million Members, Million Hours of Service Initiative, McConnell AFB Youth Programs occasionally offers service projects for youth to attend. In addition, we encourage families to volunteer together or intentionally provide opportunities for their children to give back to their community. Families can also visit www.bgca.org/millionhours for tips and ideas to help engage children in service. Share your photos of service initiatives through Facebook or twitter with the hash tag #1hourequals.
Congressional Award ProgramThe Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all 14 to 23 year-olds. Young people may register when they turn 13 1/2 years old and must complete their activities before their 24th birthday. Participants earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver, and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas: Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. Earning the Congressional Award is a fun and interesting way to get more involved in something you already enjoy or something you’d like to try for the first time. You move at your own pace – on your own or with your friends. This is not an award for past accomplishments. Instead, you are honored for achieving your own challenging goals after registering for the program. Regardless of your situation, you can earn the Congressional Award. The Congressional Award has no minimum grade point average requirements. It also accommodates young people with special needs or disabilities who are willing to take the challenge.
