The following is a listing of some scholarships available for military dependent students.  It will be updated periodically as new information is received.  All questions should be directed to the organization offering the scholarship.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial Space Camp Scholarship
Deadline:  Applications must be postmarked no later than March 10 each year.

Amount: The scholarship covers full tuition to Space Camp including: round trip transportation from student’s home base to Space Camp, meals, lodging and program materials.
Number Awarded: Not specified
Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in grades 6 through 9 and be the child of a military member on Active Duty or mobilized with the Guard or Reserve or the child of a military member who died while serving on Active Duty or mobilized Guard or Reserve.

COLLEGE

Air Force Aid Society General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program

Deadline: Online applications are due no later than March 9, 2012.  FDFF and GPA forms are due April 15, 2012.

Amount: $2,000

Number Awarded: Up to 3,000 grants

Eligibility: The need-based grant program is open to the dependent children of active duty, Title 10 Reservists on extended active duty, Title 32 AGR performing full-time active duty, retired, retired reservists and deceased Air Force members. Spouses of active duty members and surviving spouses of deceased personnel are also eligible.  All applicants must be enrolled as full-time undergraduates at an accredited college or university during the 2012-2013 academic year, and are required to maintain a minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average.

Air Force Association: Lt Col Romeo and Josephine Bass Ferretti Scholarship

Deadline: Applications have not yet been posted for this year.

Amount: Scholarships are in the amount of $2,500

Number Awarded: Not specified

Eligibility: Minor dependents of active duty Air Force, Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard enlisted airmen. It is for students pursuing an undergraduate degree in the area of science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has graduated from high school in 2011 and who is entering their first year at an accredited institution of high learning.  Recipients will be selected by committee based upon high academic achievement, good character and financial need.

Air Force Association: Grantham Scholarship

Deadline: Applications have not yet been posted for the 2012-2013 school year.

Amount: Full scholarship to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree, bearing a total value of approximately $36,000, from Grantham University, also includes required books and software.

Number Awarded: One

Eligibility: Must be a dependent of an Air Force active duty, Guard or Reserve member; or be a member of the Air Force Association; or be a dependent of a member of the Air Force Association.  Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and meet the University’s minimum admissions requirements.

Scholarships for Military Children

Deadline: Your complete application package must be received at a commissary by close of business February 24, 2012.

Amount: $1500

Number Awarded: A minimum of one $1500 scholarship will be awarded at every commissary location where qualified applications are received. More than one scholarship per commissary may be available based on response and funding. The scholarship provides for payment of tuition, books, lab fees and other related expenses.

Eligibility: Dependent, unmarried children under age 23 of active duty personnel, reserve/guard and retired military members, or survivors of service members who died while on active duty or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military.  Applicants should ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, are currently enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) database and that they have a current dependent military ID card. The DEERS database will be the primary method of verifying eligibility.

Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a full-time undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall term of 2011. All applicants must also have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 basis) to be eligible to apply.

Fisher House: Heroes’ Legacy Scholarships

Deadline: Your complete application package must be received at a commissary by close of business March 16, 2012.

Amount: Recipients will receive a scholarship grant, not to exceed the costs of tuition, books, lab fees, room and board, to any accredited U. S. post-secondary institution of high learning. The amount of the scholarship may be reduced by other funds that the student has received, from federal or state government programs or other grants.

Number Awarded: Scholarship grants for this special program are principally underwritten by the author’s after tax proceeds from the book “Of Thee I Sing. A Letter to My Daughters” written by President Barack Obama. The amount to be awarded each year depends on the amount of royalties and other potential donations.

Eligibility: Dependent, unmarried children under age 23 of active duty personnel, Reserve/Guard and retired military members, or survivors of service members who died while on active duty may apply for a Heroes’ Legacy Scholarship if they meet one of the following additional criteria:

  • One of the parents died while serving on active duty in any branch or component of the U. S. Armed Forces since September 11, 2001, or
  • One of the parents, while serving on active duty, became disabled, meaning that the parent qualified for receipt of Traumatic Service members’ Group Life Insurance (TSGLI) or
  • One of the parents received a permanent and total compensation rating of 100% from the Department of Defense or Department of Veterans Affairs on or after September 11, 2001.

If a student or parent is not sure whether they qualify, they can submit documentation to Fisher House Foundation which will make such determinations on a case by case basis. Documentation should be sent via email to JWeiskopf@fisherhouse.org. Please include “Heroes’ Legacy Scholarships” in the subject line. If no response is provided within one week, please call Fisher House Foundation at (888) 294-8560 to ensure the email was received.

In addition to the above, the student must possess a DD Form 1173 (United States Uniformed Services Identification Card). Eligibility, including survivors of deceased members, will be determined using the DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) database.  Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, full-time in the fall of 2011 in an accredited U.S. college or university, or junior/community college. They must have a minimum cumulative unweighted grade point average of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 basis). College freshmen must submit a first semester college transcript.

McConnell Officer’s Spouses’ Club

Eligibility: Applicants may be a military dependent child or spouse or the dependent of a Federal Civilian employee at McConnell AFB.  They must be accepted to or enrolled in a four-year, two-year, technical or trade school.  A full listing of requirements is attached below.

Deadline: The scholarship is currently closed, but you can submit a form to be notified when the 2012 application becomes available.

Amount: $3,000 or up to the program costs, whichever is the lesser amount.

Number Awarded: Not specified

Eligibility: Dependent children, age 24 and under (as of application deadline), of U.S. military service personnel or spouses of U.S. military service personnel and must be current high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a fulltime undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-or four-year college or university or vocational-technical school for the 2010-11 academic year.
